30th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Parasitology

Wednesday 15th March 2023 at University of Giessen

30th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Parasitology (DGP).

The Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), which will be hosting the event from 15-17 March 2023, traces its roots back to the year 1607, while the city’s first mention in written documents (as Giezzen) even goes back as far as 1197. It is a city with a population of about 90,000, which is the proud home of two Universities with a combined student population of about 37,000. The JLU is one of the few German universities which host both a human and a veterinarian medical faculty. In 1850, the University of Giessen hired Rudolf Leuckart as Associate Professor. In 1868, he founded the Institute of Parasitology. This makes the University of Giessen the cradle of the first and oldest Parasitology Institute in Germany. The university was later renamed to Justus Liebig University, in honour of Justus von Liebig, the founder of modern agricultural chemistry and inventor of artificial fertiliser. You may also discover a statue of Wilhelm Konrad Röntgen, the discoverer of X-rays, in a small park in Giessen, where he was Professor of Physics from 1879 to 1888.

The 3-day event will offer nine keynote lectures delivered by hand-picked eminent scientists, representing the whole spectrum of parasitology, from protozoan to metazoan and from human to animal parasites, but also offering insights into the perspective of end beneficiaries of parasitological control programmes. Several parallel sessions, including sessions on emerging parasitic diseases, OneHealth, NTDs, Parasite Immunology, Molecular Parasitology and more, will allow participants to discuss the current status quo of parasitology, offering a balanced mix of basic, technical, translational, and clinical science. It also offer  workshops on specialised topics, ranging from target identification/drug development, exit strategies of intracellular parasites, the physics of parasitism to the increasing problem of drug resistance.

The social evening will take place in the Dammühle, a centuries-old, converted dam mill located near the beautiful medieval city of Marburg; a venue which is likely to satisfy the taste of even the most demanding foodies amongst the parasitological community.

The organising committee is looking forward to hosting you in Giessen for what promises to be an interesting and stimulating conference, and to meet again in person after a long period of online conferences to discuss new developments in contemporary parasitology.
